Featured Feature: Promote Your Library With Network Personalizer

The Network Personalizer portal allows you to easily and non-disruptively promote resources and activities at your library in at least two different ways. First, you can update the Welcome Screen to show notices of upcoming events or new services by changing the background image or by adding a Welcome Screen message. Second, Session Profiles can be configured to automatically launch a web browser that opens with a new on-line resource, instructions for using a new service, a web-based interactive tour, or a library or community blog.

To leverage Network Personalizer to promote your library's services, simply log in at http://np.userful.com , click the Welcome Screen or Session Profiles icon, and supply an appropriate image or URL (remember to apply and update configurations for the changes to take effect).

And if you come up with any creative uses for branding that you'd like to share in the next newsletter, please drop us a line. There just may be some prizes involved...

Meanwhile, the British Library is trying to figure out how to balance the rights of content producers, the needs of content consumers and the role of Digital Rights Management in the library.
• ZDNet UK (news): British Library calls for digital copyright action
• PublicTechnology.net (background): British Library national digital archive endorsed by MP committee

In related news, The National Library of New Zealand and The British Library have teamed up to create a new web crawler tool that archives and indexes the web. While similar functionality already exists through Google and its cache, and the WayBackMachine Internet archive , the new system will also have permission, workflow and quality management. The crawler is expected to be released as open source software at the end of this year. Read more:
