ALA Notes & Report from Chicago

Daniel, Yani and Ken from the Userful team were recently at the ALA Conference in Chicago and loved meeting so many of our customers face to face and of course, also had a great time talking to all the other libraries planning to get started with Userful Desktop. It was great to see those of you that were able to pop by and say hello! It was a fun show and our information packs on the BTOP grants program were the hit of the tradeshow!

Resources & Tools: Cool Site of the Month

This past month has been an exciting one, as it is actually the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Mission. There has been much in the news about this, and we happened to come across a really great multimedia site that does a play by play of the entire mission. The interactive website allows you to see and hear the journey of the Apollo 11 craft from launch right up until Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon. The site uses computer animation, original audio transmissions and video clips, documents and photographs to bring the experience to life. Of course, with Userful workstations, flash or multimedia sites like this are easy for your users to enjoy!

Free Computer Winner! (ALA Giveaway)

With our commitment to helping libraries with their public computing needs, we thought we'd do a great giveaway for ALA - a Free Computer to whichever library needed it most. So many of you stopped and shared your stories with us, it was hard to just come up with one.

We think it is wonderful how libraries go beyond the call of duty to provide space and resources for programs that really make a difference in their communities. Our winner, Bonnie Matlow and her team are building a Youth drop-in center that helps kids turn to more positive choices than drugs, alchohol and tobacco use:

"We have a drop-off centre for young people where they can come after school and do their homework and other activities while waiting to be picked up by their parents. We provide a safe place for them, free of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. Our county has 3x the average rate of abuse compared to the state, which is also one of the highest rate of abuse of tobacco, alcohol and drugs in the nation."
