Making a Difference to School Children in Brazil

Our mission at Userful is to connect the world through sustainable desktop computing. We work hard to achieve that every day. Here is an update of what we've been up to in schools in rural Brazil:

Students working at a multiseat computer lab in rural Brazil

Notice how each student individually controls his or her own station and applications. To the students, it seems like they each have their own dedicated PC, but in reality they are all sharing the resources of a single computer.  Each student can be working with a different program, even multimedia, and get a high quality computing experience.

Below is an example of a school set up in a more urban area in Brazil:

Over the past few years, we've noticed that regions such as Latin America and Asia have been shifting to Linux and open source software in their schools in much larger numbers. Their goal? To eliminate software costs, and make it feasible to deploy plug-and-play computers right in the classroom on small budgets.  Our focus on making a low-cost, robust solution has even made it possible for schools in indigenous villages in Brazil, where infrastructure is minimal, electricity is unreliable, and there is little physical space, to provide computer access to many students for the very first time.  Each day we can make a difference like that, is a great day at Userful!
